The course allows learners to delve into detail and develop their understanding on key topics such as globalisation, developing marketing, managing business events and learning about the key leadership skills needed to run a successful business. Within the curriculum there are opportunities to interact with local businesses to develop your understanding of business concepts in a real-life setting thus bringing theoretical concepts to life. You will leave the course not only with the knowledge of how businesses work but with the understanding of how to apply these concepts to real life situations, a valuable skill set in an ever-changing world.

Course Introduction

Business Studies is an enjoyable and challenging one-year course that is equivalent in value to one GCSE. The course is an excellent base for advanced study, and many of our students have chosen to continue onto study Business Studies at level 3 on completion of this course. There have been numerous students in recent years who have then gone on to study the subject at degree level and / or enter into a business-related career via an apprenticeship.

Course Modules

The course consists of three mandatory units and one optional unit. Two units will be assessed based on assignments that will range from reports to business presentations and team activities. One of the units, Finance for Business is assessed by examination.

Mandatory units

  • Introduction to business (coursework)
  • Enterprise in the Business World (coursework)
  • Finance for Business (examination)

Optional units

  • Promoting a brand
  • Principles of Customer Service
  • Recruitment, Selection and Employment

Assessment

The Finance for Business unit is assessed by examination. All other units are assessed entirely through coursework. The work you complete will be based on evidence from real organisations and the assessments will be varied (including report writing and more practical work such as presentations and group activities). Assignments that students are to complete range from applying for interviews and creating an image for a brand. Written material such as reports and presentations will also be produced by students.
