Medical Science - BTEC Extended Diploma
Special Entry Requirements:
In addition to the Level 3 BTEC entry requirements you will need a GCSE science grade 5.
If you are looking for a career in medical science, this is the course for you. This is an extremely interesting course which gives you a balanced science education with some specialist learning in the medicine-related fields.
The medical specialisms focus on microbiological techniques, medical physics, human physiology, disease and chemical laboratory techniques. You will develop the skills necessary to pursue a career in a wide range of science-based contexts, including radiography, medical technology, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and biomedical science.
- Physiology of Human Body Systems – you will study the lymphatic and immune systems, the digestive, respiratory and circulatory system.
- Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction – this unit extends your study of human physiology to the reproductive system, sexually transmitted disease and the regulation of a constant internal environment.
- Medical Physics Techniques – this unit looks at modern diagnostic tools and techniques, including X-rays, MRI scanning and radiotherapy.
- Diseases and Infections – you will learn about the different causes and treatments of disease, how diseases spread and how different types of diseases and infections are treated.
- Genetics and Genetic Engineering – in this unit you will learn about the structure of DNA, genes and chromosomes, and learn how faulty genes are inherited.
- Microbiological Techniques – you will learn how to culture and grow micro-organisms, how to work with them safely and how to use aseptic techniques.
- Chemical Laboratory Techniques – this unit will give you an insight into how a range of drugs and medicines are made and how they are checked for purity.
- Fundamentals of Science – you will learn how to measure quantities for chemical reactions, identify cell and tissue types using microscopy. You will investigate energy transfers and learn to communicate your ideas clearly.
- Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques – this unit will teach you about the fundamental biological molecules in our bodies, including carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, lipids; nucleic acids. You will also investigate how digested food is converted into energy.
- Practical Chemical Analysis – will give you experience of a range of analytical techniques used to detect the drugs and chemicals present in a variety of materials.
- Working in the Science Industry – you will learn what procedures are followed and communicated in a scientific context and be able to design a laboratory. You will learn about laboratory information management and safe working practices.
- Perceptions of Science – this unit looks at how science and scientific ideas are developed and influenced by wider society, together with the ethical challenges presented by recent treatment and scientific advances.
- Scientific Practical Techniques – in this unit you will learn to use a variety of analytical techniques. You will do experiments to separate and assess the purity of substances and use a variety of instruments and sensors.
- Using Mathematical tools & Using statistics in Science – this units will give you the fundamental mathematical tools to help you interpret health and biomedical-related data.
There are no examinations for this qualification. All units are assessed by internally set and marked assignments.
This course is a recognised route into employment or an apprenticeship, or a degree in any of the following subjects – biomedical Science, human biology, human physiology and health, pharmaceutical science, healthcare science, medical genetics, medical biochemistry, medical microbiology.
