Media Studies - A Level
Special Entry Requirements:
You will need to meet the A Level entry requirements. It is not necessary to have studied Media at GCSE.
Media Studies involves the study of media artefacts – mainly TV, film and print media – media audiences and practices within the media industry and enables students to understand key concepts about the media through analysis and through practical work. Students concern themselves with how media artefacts ‘make meanings’ for audiences, how they are composed and made, and how they are marketed.
Media Studies has its own body of knowledge and concepts, some of which come from Sociology, others from the visual arts and Psychology. These may be unfamiliar at first. The department is resourced with technology for filming and editing, as well as with computers for desk-top-publishing. Teaching is supported by videos as well as by up to date articles from the media itself.
Media A Level Transition Pack – We have created a transition pack on our website to show you the kind of work that you will be doing at level 3 and to help you prepare for September.
Media Studies makes a close study of different media ‘platforms’ – broadcasting, print and e-media. For this reason it is very up to date and closely linked to the real world of media practice and media consumption. You study how media products are constructed to target particular audiences. You consider how media products reflect and indeed have an impact on society as well. You will develop your technical expertise through working with print, web page and moving image software. Media Studies is a useful subject to study alongside Art; Drama; Computing and ICT; English; Psychology and Business. The media department is well resourced with computers and there is also a dedicated Media technician.
Students studying Media for only the first year, will achieve the AS qualification. Students studying for the two years will achieve the A-Level qualification. Students will study either:
AS MEDIA AQA (1 Year): 70% exam, 30% non-exam assessment: media product
Paper 1: An examination lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes. It consists of multiple choice questions, short answer questions and extended responses questions. These will examine student’s understanding of the key concepts studied, as well as specific media artefacts that have been studied prior to the exam.
Non-exam assessment – media product: From a choice of topics related to the year’s theme (the theme changes annually to reflect the dynamic, fast moving nature of the Media industry) students will produce a statement of intent, then create their own media artefact. Students will have a particular intended audience in mind, and should carefully construct and tailor their media artefact to cater for and appeal to this audience.
OR A-LEVEL MEDIA AQA (2 Years): 70% exam, 30% non-exam assessment: media product
Paper 1 (35%): An examination lasting 2 hours. It consists of short answer and extended responses questions. These will focus on issues and debates in the media.
Paper 2 (35%): An examination lasting 2 hours. It consists of short answer and extended responses questions. Students will be required to analyse given media artefacts, making reference to other media artefacts they have studied. There is also a focus on the contexts around which the media artefacts were created.
Non-exam assessment – media product: From a choice of topics related to the year’s theme (the theme changes annually to reflect the dynamic, fast moving nature of the Media industry) students will produce a statement of intent, then create a range of their own media artefacts, across different media platforms. Students will have a particular intended audience in mind, and should carefully construct and tailor their media artefact to cater for and appeal to this audience.
