Mature Students

Scarborough Sixth Form College has welcomed mature students for many years. They are regarded as valued members of the college community. This page aims to give brief answers to some of the questions prospective students often ask. It really should be read alongside the full College Prospectus which provides a lot of information about the college and its courses. Don’t hesitate to drop in or to contact us in any convenient way if you want to know more.

When should I apply?

Applications are welcome at any time. It is not normally possible to start a course after the end of September.

How do I apply?

There is a short application form to complete then an interview will be arranged. A reference will be required. No fees are payable until you are enrolled in September at the start of your course.

What is a Mature Student?

Any student who is at least 19 years old on the 1st September 2012, and starting a new course.

Can I study part-time?

Yes, we will try and work out a convenient timetable.

How many Mature students does the college have?

Anywhere between 15-50. It is unlikely there will be another mature student in your class.

What courses do they take?

There is hardly a course in college which has not been taken in recent years by mature students.

Can I take a GCSE?

Yes. The college offers a range of courses including GCSE Maths, GCSE English,GCSE Science and GCSE Psychology as well as BTEC Extended Certificates, A levels, BTEC Diplomas and BTEC Extended Diplomas.

When are the classes?

The are 4 lessons a week for each course throughout the academic year. The lessons will normally be on 4 different days and at different times. Some courses have no lessons finishing later than 1pm. It is sometimes possible to make more flexible arrangements for particular courses.

Are there shorter courses?

There is a separate programme of shorter courses held in the evenings, however GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs are not available during this time.

How can I find out about more courses?

What provision is made for students with special needs?

This college has a strong commitment to do its utmost to facilitate application and study for all members of the community e.g. there is wheelchair access to most of the college and signing interpreters have been engaged to support some students. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

What fees will I have to pay?

Most mature students pay a fee. There are some exemptions however these are subject to change. Please click here to download a fee sheet.
