Living in Scarborough

Scarborough and the Surrounding Area

Scarborough is a town on the north east coast and is next to a National Park. The town built up its reputation in the 17th century as a spa town famous for healthy air and water and has benefited from the resulting tourist industry.

It is a town soaked in history having experienced Roman occupation and Viking invasions and it still has the remains of a castle from the 12th century. Until twenty years ago the harbour was filled with fishing boats but in more recent times this has declined along with the British fishing industry.

The community enjoys a low crime rate and as such is a relatively safe area for students. The town contains a number of language schools, being popular for many nationalities aiming to improve written and spoken English.

Scarborough is well connected being on a direct train line to Manchester International airport and only one train change for London. For students from the continent the town is only 75kms from Hull, a busy ferry port.

There is a university in the town, University of Hull Scarborough campus, to which we have excellent links and are an Associate College. The University attracts significant numbers of international students.

There are all the facilities you would expect in a bustling English seaside town: cinema, theatre (where all the plays of world famous playwright Alan Ayckbourne are premiered), nightclubs, market and shops.

Nearby, approximately 4km along the coast, is Cayton Bay. Voted one of the best surfing areas in the North of England, the bay hosts many competitions attracting world class pro surfers. There is also a surf school for those not quite up to standard!

Scarborough is set in beautiful countryside offering ample opportunity of hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and other outdoor activities. The beautiful Yorkshire Dales is a great setting for these activities. Lying approx 90km west of Scarborough, it attracts hundreds of people every year, some wishing to try adventerous activities like rock climbing, caving, mountain biking and abseiling whilst others like to simply hike.
