SPORT BTEC LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA
This two year course is ideal for students who are totally focused on a career and/or higher level course in sport. It is very practically based and includes how the body works and adapts to exercise; coaching and sports development; team and individual sports; outdoor and adventurous activities. In the second year all students complete a work placement in a sport related field. There is also an opportunity to be part of a successful exchange to Sweden, where students experience a different culture and complete part of their outdoor and adventurous activity module there experiencing winter sports, such as downhill and cross country skiing, skating and ice hockey.
The BTEC Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to 2 A levels, and consists of 12 units in total, eight Core and four Specialist units.
Are there any special requirements?
No! The most important prerequisites are a positive and a genuine interest in sport. Students who undertake the diploma will already have a strong bias toward a career in the sector and/or to continue with this subject into Higher Education.

The eight core units followed by all students are:

- Sports Development
- Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise
- Practical Team Sports *
- Practical Individual Sports *
* Learners must select one of these units (unit 8 or 9) as a core unit and may select the other as a specialist unit

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
- You will develop practical skills as a performer, leader and official.
- You will learn how the body works and how it adapts to exercise
- You will appreciate and experience vocational opportunities within this sector.
- You will develop your knowledge and understanding of Physical Education and Sport and enhance your ability to analyse and evaluate key topics and issues.
How is the Course assessed?
The course is continually assessed via presentations, projects, posters and performing in a variety of roles. There are no external examinations on this course.
Diploma students will complete six units in each year completing a total of twelve units, equivalent to a total of 720 guided learning hours.
What career opportunities are there?
BTEC Level 3Diploma in Sport can lead to a range of higher education courses in sport development and coaching, physical education and leisure management.
Posts in leisure management are increasingly looking for BTEC applicants to recruit onto their own in house training programmes and BTEC sports students have secured posts with many of the big local employers.
…and what else?
All sports students play an active role in the college’s representative and recreational sports programme and have received district, county and national honours.
The Department organises ski courses and runs an annual exchange with students from Ostersund in Sweden. Trips are also arranged to major sporting venues and sports departments of universities.
