SCIENCE LEVEL 2 DOUBLE GCSE

GCSE Science is a one year course, which
would give you a qualification equivalent to two GCSEs. It is intended for
students who have not yet got the qualifications for Advanced level work.
Students completing the course sometimes continue to the Advanced Science
course but a few continue to AS & A levels or BTEC Courses.

The course develops scientific skills, research skills, knowledge and an understanding of how the skills and knowledge are used in the workplace.

Are there any special requirements?

The main qualifications are a desire to learn and a willingness to meet deadlines. If you have mainly GCSE grade D’s you will be suited to the course.  Attendance is a key factor in the success of this course.

What/how will I be studying?

The course consists of 2 independent GCSE qualifications.

Science B

This GCSE is 75% examination and 25% controlled coursework assessment. It includes:

Unit 1: My World

This unit is about the Universe, our planet, and how we make use of the materials that are available to us to make useful products. You will also learn about life on our planet, how energy flows through food chains, and the importance of the element carbon.

Unit 2: My family and home

In this unit you will learn about our senses and how our body works. You will also find out about the science associated with your home, for example using fuels and electricity.

Unit 3: Making my world a better place

You will learn about how science is involved in improving our lives, studying a wide range of topics such as pollution, cancer treatments and home insulation.

Unit 4:  Using Scientific Skills for the Benefit of Society:

This is a coursework unit and will involve demonstrating scientific skills in controlled assessments at college.

Additional applied science

This GCSE is 60% coursework and 40% examination and includes:

Unit 1: Science at work

This unit is assessed by examination and involves learning about the role of scientists in our lives and covers topics such as sport science, material science, forensics and farming.

Unit 2: How scientists use practical techniques

This unit is a coursework unit and will involve a variety of assignments based on how science knowledge and skills are used in the world.

How is the Course assessed?

Science B is assessed by three examinations and several controlled coursework assignments and is 75% exam and 25% coursework.

Additional applied science is assessed by one examination and several coursework assignments. It is 40% exam and 60% coursework.

What skills will I need and be developing during this course?

You will need to become numerate and be able to express scientific ideas in your own words.
You will need to measure things carefully and accurately.

The aim is to build these up through the work that you do.

What career opportunities are there?

Most students who take this course continue to Advanced level courses but there are a few who take up employment in related areas. Whatever you choose next to do the Science GCSE will be a firm
foundation for any pathway.
