MEDIA BTEC LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA

MEDIA BTEC LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA

The BTEC level 3 Diploma in Media is a course that will give you important insights into the Media industry which is a hugely influential force in modern society. You will learn how media products influence individuals’ perceptions of others in society and how it influences society itself through the study of newspapers, films and TV. Studying A level Media will give you up-to-date knowledge of aspects of the media industry as well as technical expertise through the use of the internet and software for the creation of original media products like magazines, posters and video material.
The BTEC Diploma is equivalent to 2 A levels.

Are there any special requirements?

Students need to have reached the minimum entry requirement for the College’s Advanced courses; however as BTEC is 100% coursework, students who choose this course should prefer this method of assessment.

What and how will I be studying?

You will have a mixture of classroom-based lessons, group work, practical sessions, group and individual field visits and the chance for independent study. BTEC units are always built around an industry scenario and the work follows the path of research, planning and production. You will take on the roles of people who work in the media. For example you will study Single Camera Work, Video Editing, you will make a Factual production for television and learn about and make television adverts. You will work alone and with other students. You will ‘hire’ equipment to use off-site as well as in college.
At the end of the first year, having completed seven units, you will gain a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Media.
If you study the relevant four units you will achieve a Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Media.

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?

The course is coursework based with some practical assessment as part of some units. In addition to gaining media industry knowledge you will have the chance to develop your organisational skills, as well as the ability to work to deadlines, and learn to work as part of a team. You will also have lots of opportunities to develop the research, team working and presentational skills valued by universities and industry. You will also develop confidence to present ideas to others and to do such things as conduct interviews.

What career opportunities are there?

The BTEC qualifications are recognised by most universities and therefore successful completion will enable students to continue their studies in higher education on a related course. Alternatively students will find that BTEC qualifications are valued by employers and can lead to career opportunities in a variety of fields including marketing and events management, as well as directly related careers in the IT and computing and entertainment industries.

…and what else?

It is possible to sample the course at different levels:

  • The BTEC Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to two A levels
  • The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one A level
  • The BTEC Level 3 Certificate is equivalent to one AS level

There are no exams in this qualification. There will be a wide variety of activities and contact with the industry throughout the two years in order for students to gain an understanding the industry and how it operates.
