GENERAL STUDIES AS / A LEVEL

GENERAL STUDIES AS / A LEVEL

General Studies is an AS and A Level that is studied for about an hour a week. You will get the chance to explore and discuss a variety of issues from the world of science, arts, culture and society – the kind of issues you will see on TV and read about in the papers. Examples include GM foods, cloning, the impact of the ICT, reality TV, political parties, modern art, community conflict and the role of the tabloid press. Some of these you may already have views on, some you may

cover in your other AS courses. This course will give you some more ideas.

General Studies lessons will include plenty of heated debate and argument, as well as preparing you for the General Studies exams. Many universities accept General Studies as part of their entrance requirements, and many of our students have been greatly helped in obtaining university places by passing General Studies.

The General Studies course will add value to your Sixth Form education, help you in other subjects and impress universities and employers with your multidisciplinary knowledge and skills.

  • It’s your chance to obtain a 4th A Level, which will look good on application forms, and demonstrate your ability to cope with an additional workload
  • Well over 90% of our students generally pass the A Level
  • Many universities accept General Studies and award a full points tariff for it (remember that University Departments do not always follow the University’s official policy).
  • Even if universities do not officially accept General Studies, many students who underachieve in other subjects are offered places on the basis of a General Studies pass (a handy insurance policy). This happens every year to a significant number of our students.
  • Above all, it’s good for you! It’s an opportunity to broaden your knowledge and understanding and to discuss and consider major and controversial issues.

Are there any special requirements?

Almost all students taking AS & A levels and BTEC Nationals take General Studies AS or A level.

What do I study?

  • The Social Domain: social sciences and politics
  • Culture, Arts and Humanities: beliefs, the media and creativity
  • Science, Mathematics and Technology

…and what else?

Above all, it’s good for you! It’s an opportunity to broaden your knowledge and understanding and to discuss and consider major and controversial issues.
