ENGLISH GCSE

ENGLISH GCSE

Our 1 year GCSE is great fun and the best thing about it is there’s no more Shakespeare and no more Poetry! During the year we study some interesting non-fiction texts and we develop your skills to write for different purposes and audiences. The Speaking and Listening assessments encourage you to take part in lively discussions and role plays but the most fascinating element of the course is the study of spoken language. We will record and analyse lots of people speaking in different situations and we will study the things that influence how we talk the way we do..

The meaning and message of the work and the way that it communicates, distinguishes this subject from other specialisms in art and design. The atmosphere in the studios is alive with a diversity of ideas and methods of work. Many students gravitate towards the studios in their own time to continue their work in a supportive, highly creative and very happy environment.

Are there any special requirements?

There are no specific requirements. We accept students on this course with grades ranging from D to G, however if your grade is a G or an F it may take two years to gain a C grade. If you come to S6F with a grade D you will be given the opportunity to do a re-sit in November. For this we will carry across the coursework mark you gained at school, but we will give you the opportunity to gain improved Speaking and Listening marks.

What will I study?

Throughout the course you will produce a new portfolio of coursework. You will write an essay on a short novel called ‘Heroes’ by Robert Cormier and you will do a piece of descriptive writing and a piece of writing on an aspect of the Media. You will also have to do a little work on a Shakespeare play but this will be assessed orally. You will have to complete three Speaking and Listening Assessments: an individual presentation; a role play; a group discussion. You will prepare for the exam by writing for different purposes, practising reading comprehensions and reading a selection of poetry from other cultures

What Career Opportunities Are There?

English GCSE is one of the most important qualifications you can have. You will need it to do A levels and BTEC’s and to get to University. You will also need it for your future employment. Few employers will accept you without a GCSE in English.
